Hiking In the Moosehead Lake Region can bring some great rewards, like these outstanding views.
Gulf Hagas
Appropriately nicknamed “the Grand Canyon of Maine”, this magnificent gorge is nearly 4 miles long, at times displaying vertical slate walls 300′ to 400′ deep. The west branch of the Pleasant River drops some 400′ within these four miles creating numerous waterfalls, chutes, and pools. The falls are particularly spectacular during the spring runoff. This is also a must trip in the fall during the peak of the foliage season. The summer offers tempting swimming holes under waterfalls. This is truly one of the most spectacular gorges in all New England and a highly recommended hiking trip. The gorge and adjacent land has recently been purchased by the national Park Service. “The Hermitage” (a majestic stand of towering white king pine) was declared a registered National landmark in 1968. This land is now owned by the Nature Conservancy.

Greenville community rallies together to SAVE THE DEPOT!

Greenville Junction Train Depot
GREENVILLE – One of the hottest-selling items at the Moosehead Lake Chamber of Commerce craft fair this past July 4 was a t-shirt emblazoned with a picture of the abandoned Greenville Junction railroad depot. Artist Milt Christianson created the eye-catching design of the elegant Victorian station. He has been seen at his easel many times over the years painting colorful watercolors of the unique round-turreted the building.

The view from the top of this prominent Moosehead landmark is truly outstanding. This is a challenging hike to a manned Forest Service fire tower.
Directions: To get to the trailhead, drive to Kokadjo 20 miles north of Greenville, on the Lily Bay Road. From Kokadjo, drive 5 miles (be sure to take the left fork .2 miles north of Kokadjo) to the Georgia Pacific Paper Company gate, where a small fee will be charged. Proceed ahead approximately 3 miles to the Maine Forest Service Bear Brook Campsite on the right. Take the next left on a well used dirt road. Proceed ahead for approximately 6.5 miles to the trailhead on the left. Look for a sign. Park on the right, just beyond the trailhead.

Jeannette began journaling right after her diagnosis in 1976 as a means to express her inner thoughts and feelings
Jeannette Morrill, A Story Of Hope
Jeannette Morrill of Shirley, Maine was 23 years old, just beginning her life and looking forward to her career as an educator and looking forward to her impending marriage. That was when her life was changed forever. Jeanette was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension, (PH), an incurable disease. She was told she had possibly two years to live. That was 1976. Rather than sinking into a cycle of self pity and giving up, Jeanette spent her time living her life to the fullest extent possible.
